Developing Your Palliative Care Practice Course

This course was developed in 2006 in response to provide the opportunity for Nursing Auxiliaries/Health Care Assistants to develop their skills and knowledge in relation to the delivery of Palliative Care in different care settings.

The objectives of the course are to provide participants with the opportunity to:

  • Reflect on their role within the Multi-Disciplinary Team in relation to the delivery of palliative care in both malignant and non-malignant conditions
  • Develop awareness and understanding about the potential losses faced by patients and their families, and identify coping strategies to help manage these
  • Develop their communication skills and be able to use these skills to offer appropriate support to patients and carers
  • Explore the use of the HEARTS technique to aid relaxation and stress for patients and carers

The course runs for 1 day per week over a 5 week period.
