St Ann’s Hospice is calling on poker fans around Manchester to call their bluff at a charity poker night at Tiger Tiger nightclub in Manchester on Thursday 13 September.
With first class prizes up for grabs for the evening’s best bluffers, including Go-karting at Daytona and an overnight stay in a luxury hotel, the charity poker games are set to be red hot and have already attracted the support of local celebrities, who are looking forward to taking part in the name of charity on the night.
Guests attending the evening will enjoy a welcome drink, buffet and disco and for those willing to take a gamble, other top prizes for winners include a private karaoke booth and cinema passes. Tickets for this worthwhile charity event will cost £25 for non-players and £40 for players.
Terry McDonnell, chief executive of St Ann’s Hospice, said: “This event provides a great opportunity for both the well practiced and uninitiated poker player to come and enjoy a fun and exciting evening, whilst at the same time helping to raise money for those living with life-threatening illnesses in Greater Manchester.
“This is set to be a memorable event and I can only hope that our poker night will follow hot on the heels of the success of our previous fundraising events.”
St Ann’s most recent charity event, the ‘Manchester Midnight Walk’, saw over 1,000 people walk over 10km through the streets of Manchester at night to raise money for the Hospice and attracted the support of celebrities such as Nikki Sanderson and Dave Spikey, amongst many others.

At 4pm on Tuesday afternoon (14th August), the sky above Old Trafford Cricket
Ground was awash with 5,000 Blue and White balloons, as Lancashire’s Chief
Executive Jim Cumbes launched the St Ann’s Hospice Balloon Race 2007.
Although this is a unique concept, the rules of the race are very simple; people
all over Greater Manchester purchased a balloon in the race, and the balloon
that travels the furthest distance will win its owner a weekend break in Europe.
Each balloon has a tag attached to it and whilst the balloon decomposes the
tag falls to the ground with instructions to send it back to St Ann’s
Hospice with details where they found the Tag. During last year’s race,
St Ann’s received a response from Poland and before that, various places
in France.
This year’s Balloon Race raised £60,000, with all funds going directly
back into St Ann’s three Greater Manchester sites; Heald Green (Cheadle),
Little Hulton and the Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.
As an independent local charity, St Ann’s Hospice needs to raise £16,000
every day through voluntary contributions to offer its wide range of services.
In total it costs £9 million each year to run the Hospice, of which only
35% is received from government funding. It is the support of the local community
that enables St Ann’s Hospice to continue providing the highest standards
of care to patients, families and carers.
So whilst travelling this Summer both home and abroad, keep your eyes peeled
for Balloons or Tags from this year’s St Ann’s Hospice Balloon Race
2007, and help someone win a weekend break.
Wellington School pupils in Altrincham raised a magnificent £21,000 in aid of St Ann’s Hospice through a sponsored walk in memory of their teacher, Miss Linda Betts, who died at the Hospice in January.
Miss Betts taught for 34 years at the school, and as a result of pupils’ lives being touched by seeing members of their family treated for cancer, the school voted for St Ann’s to benefit from their annual sponsored walk ten times around the school perimeter. Their cheque was presented to St Ann’s Chief Executive Terry McDonnell at the school’s awards night at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

A group of teenagers with Trafford Youth Service will be joining in a sponsored cycle ride on the Isle of Skye this summer in aid of St Ann’s Hospice.
The youngsters aged between 14 and 18 years old will be cycling 180 miles around the island between August 24 and 31. One of the young cyclists taking part, Adrian Doyle, said: “This is a great opportunity for us to make a difference for others and for ourselves.”
St Ann’s Fundraiser Wendy Bray said: “This will be a fantastic effort by these young people to help us continue to provide free treatment for our patients.”
The Youth Service successfully applied for a grant of £5,000 from Pot of Gold, which will be used to cover the cost of equipment, training, food and transport for their sponsored ride. Meanwhile Trafford Leisure are providing free gym passes for the young people to train for their ride.
