Cancer patient Paul Bink’s wish for a day out at the seaside resort of Blackpool was brought true by staff at St Ann’s Hospice at Heald Green, where they specialise in caring for people with life-threatening illnesses.
“They told me it was just the right treatment for me,” said Paul, aged 60, from Partington, near Manchester. “I really fancied one last ride on the Big One rollercoaster at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, but I was content with a wheelchair ride along the Golden Mile instead.”
Paul, whose previous work as a glazier saw him fitting triple glazing to the Hospice wards to keep down the noise of low flying aircraft from the nearby airport, has always enjoyed weekend outings to the famous resort.
Staff Nurse Gill Houghton and Auxiliary Nurse Suzanne Wimpenney accompanied Paul in the Hospice ambulance for the hour long journey, with driver Gary Willans providing the pushing power for the wheelchair along the prom.
St Ann’s Inpatient Services Manager Sue Taylor said: “We were only too happy to help Paul realise his wish for one more day out in Blackpool. We were sure it would bring back a lot of pleasant memories for him. But as for a last ride on the Big One, we thought it would be best if we erred on the side of caution.”

Volunteers at St Ann’s Hospice in Little Hulton are getting backing from Worsley MP Barbara Keeley to mark National Volunteer Week starting today June 1 until June 7.
The Labour MP will meeting the team of volunteers when she visits the Hospice on Friday (June 8) at 10.30am.
“They are among nearly 600 volunteers who add cheer to the Hospice and whose contribution would be equivalent to about £250,000 a year if their work had to be paid for,” said Hospice Financial Director Liam McCarthy.
Among them are Margaret Magill and Doreen Smith pictured serving tea and coffee for patients on the wards at Little Hulton, while retired teacher Margaret Tomkinson, from Horwich, has been adding colourful flower power to the Hospice once a week for more than 24 years.
Meanwhile volunteers Jackie Springthorpe, Stella Heath and Gillian Braidwood are pictured serving up lunch for daycare patient Mrs Rose Booth.
Stella, from Walkden said: “I first started volunteering at the Hospice after my husband had cancer, and I really enjoy coming once a week to spend time with the patients in daycare.”
Volunteer receptionist Ann Gardner, from Worsley added: “I think the myth still exists that a hospice is a sad place to be, but the reality is just the opposite. The volunteers add a unique feeling of enjoyment and friendliness to the atmosphere of the place, from which I am sure the patients benefit.”
Ernest Worsley, Volunteer co-ordinator at Little Hulton, said: “We have more 270 volunteers at the hospice here, and new ones are always welcome.” As well as helping serve meals and drinks to patients on the wards, there are also volunteering opportunities at St Ann’s Hospice at Heald Green, again helping daycare patients, working in their charity shops, driving, gardening and helping with fundraising.
