Romper raises funds for Hospice

A family fun day and Abba tribute night at the Romper pub and restaurant in Marple, Cheshire, helped raise £185 for St Ann’s Hospice.

The pub’s licensee, Emma Jackson, said: “The kids had a great time and it was a great way to give something back to the Hospice where they looked after my mum so well as a patient in her final days.”

St Ann’s Fundraising Officer Louise Kelly said: “We are so grateful to Emma and her customers for their generosity, as we are dependant on voluntary contributions like this to raise £16,000 a day needed to provide free care for our patients.”

RAPLEYS SCALE THE HEIGHTS FOR THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

A team from Rapleys’ Manchester office will be taking on the mighty three peaks challenge on the 19th & 20th June 2008 to raise money for St Ann’s Hospice in Manchester.

Each member is based in the Rapleys Manchester office – Justin Tuckwell, Paul Mather, Paul Barrett, Peter Nicholas and Edward Tildesley are ready to put their fitness and endurance to the test.

The three peaks challenge is described by many as “one of the ultimate challenges in the United Kingdom” consisting of 26 miles of steep rugged ascents and descents of the highest peaks in the UK. Scafell Pike at 978m (3,209 ft), Ben Nevis at 1344m (4,406 ft) and Snowdon 1085 (3,560 ft) must be scaled, posing a great challenge for anyone wishing to climb them in succession. With only 24 hours to complete the task, the effort required to complete the National 3 Peaks in cannot be under estimated.

Justin Tuckwell, Partner at Rapleys said “We are hoping to raise over £3000 for St Ann’s Hospice whilst at the same time improving our general fitness. All the guys are committed to raising as much money for this very worthwhile charity and are certainly taking the challenge very seriously with regular attendance to the gym and practice walks up both Snowdon and Scafell.”

The lack of proper sleep, food, and comfort and extreme weather conditions likely to be encountered by the Rapleys surveyors will take it’s toll but it would be a great achievement for the Rapleys team - if everything goes according to plan!

New venue for St Ann’s Hospice Summer Fair

St Ann’s Hospice Summer Fair on Saturday June 21 will be held at a different venue, while refurbishment work is carried out at their site at Heald Green near Cheadle.

This year the event will take place at Heald Green Methodist Church Hall in Brown Lane from 12 noon to 3pm, and will be opened by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Mr Warren Smith.

Hospice Fundraising Officer Louise Kelly said: “It will be an event not to be missed as there will be a host of sale stalls, crafts, a raffle, BBQ, plus fun and games for children including a bouncy castle.” Admission will be £1, with accompanied children free.

New look entrance for St Ann’s Hospice at Heald Green

A £300,000 building scheme for St Ann’s Hospice at Heald Green will start on May 12 to improve access for patients and visitors in future. It will mean closing the main entrance to the building for up to 16 weeks while contractors refurbish the reception area.

While contractors are working, all patients and visitors will be directed to a temporary reception through the rear entrance. Liam McCarthy, the Hospice Director of Finance who is overseeing the refurbishment, said: “We have made plans so that the refurbishment work will cause minimum disruption to the service provided, but we would ask patients, visitors and staff to bear with us while this essential work is carried out.”

The refurbishment of the main entrance and reception was listed as a priority by Government funders to improve access for patients who had to be manoeuvred by ambulance staff through a ‘dog leg’ entranceway into the building. As well as a new open plan reception area, the refurbishment will include a freestanding canopy over the entrance doorway to protect patients from the elements when they are admitted by ambulance.

A ‘bistro’ style area where visitors can sit and enjoy snacks and drinks will also be provided, along with a play area for children who accompany visiting families. Two new relatives’ sitting rooms will be constructed, including one for overnight stays for families.

The principal funding towards the cost of the refurbishment is a £153,000 grant from the Department of Health. Other donations totalling £97,500 have been received from trusts and benevolent organisations including the late Miss A E Hilton Trust, the Harrison Foundation, the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust, the Percy Bilton Charity and the Hedley Foundation.

St Ann’s is working hard to secure the remaining funds of almost £50,000 for fixtures and fittings including play facilities for children, sittings rooms for families and bistro furniture. Race horse an £11,000 winner for Hospice

A race horse called Diktatorship finished a winner to the tune of £11,000 for St Ann’s Hospice at Mere golf club captain’s charity sporting dinner in Cheshire over the weekend.

A local businessman became the owner of the five-year-old double winner for a year after making the top bid of £11,000 in a charity auction and dinner that ended up raising more than £23,000 for the Hospice.

Although he will not have the trouble of stabling the horse, the top bidder will be able to claim any of Diktatorship’s winnings in races over the coming year.

Mere Golf Club captain Alan Baxter, who owns a racing stable in Leek, Staffordshire, donated the five-year-old bay gelding for a year as a unique charity auction prize. Diktatorship, already on form with two wins and eight placings to his credit, was led inside the prestigious surroundings of the club’s hospitality suite to join the sporting dinner guests who turned out in force to rub shoulders from some of Britain’s rugby heroes, including World-Class Players from one of the top teams in the Guinness Premiership, Sale Sharks.

England international and former Wasps prop forward Jeff Probyn was guest speaker at the Sporting Dinner, sponsored by George Davies Solicitors LLP in Manchester, as well as associate sponsors Sellick Partnership Recruitment Specialists and O2.
